About Gorges de l'Ardèche Regional Nature Park

Located in the south of France within the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, the Gorges de l'Ardèche Regional Nature Park encompasses an 80-kilometer canyon carved by the Ardèche River through remarkable limestone plateaus. This protected area showcases diverse landscapes including deep gorges, rocky cliffs, Mediterranean shrubland, and oak forests, supporting a rich variety of wildlife including bats, peregrine falcons, and Mediterranean flora. Historically, the region was inhabited by prehistoric humans, evidenced by several important caves such as the Chauvet Cave with its prehistoric art. Today, the park is a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts who come to paddle the river’s famed rapids and calm stretches, hike scenic trails along the gorge rim, climb its vertical walls, and enjoy birdwatching or photography. Notable landmarks include the iconic Pont d’Arc, a massive natural stone arch spanning the river, and Aven d’Orgnac, a vast limestone cave complex open to visitors. Visitors also appreciate the tranquil villages scattered nearby, featuring local markets and Provençal culture. The park’s combination of spectacular scenery, biological richness, and outdoor adventure opportunities attracts over a million visitors each year, making it one of the leading nature-based destinations in southern France.
